About the Program

What Is Discovery Day?

Discovery Day gives local student groups a closer look at the people, skills, and possibilities behind a wide range of careers.

Students can meet working professionals, ask candid questions about career paths, take part in hands-on STEM activities, and learn what different roles are really like. Each event is shaped around the group, the setting, and the volunteers available.

Discovery Day was founded by Segun Akinyemi in 2022 to help students across greater Charlotte explore career paths and connect with working professionals.

The Experience

What Students Can Experience

No two Discovery Days need to look the same. Depending on the group and available volunteers, an event can include any of the following.

  1. Career Exploration

    Understand different careers, the skills they use, and the many paths people take to reach them.

  2. Real Conversations

    Meet Microsoft employees and ask honest questions about their work, choices, and experiences.

  3. Hands-On Learning

    Build, experiment, and learn through practical STEM, artificial intelligence, or coding activities.

  4. A View Inside

    Visit Microsoft Charlotte or welcome employee volunteers to a school or community organization.

Audience

Student groups from middle school through college.

Format

In person at Microsoft Charlotte or at a group's location.

Availability

Based on volunteer leadership, staffing, space, and timing.

How It Works

Discovery Day is an employee-led volunteer effort, not an official Microsoft program.

There is no dedicated staff. Microsoft Charlotte employees lead each engagement, coordinate with the student group, and volunteer their time to create the experience.

Because every event depends on people choosing to lead and help, activities and availability vary. Dates, visits, meals, equipment, and other details are never guaranteed until the people responsible for them agree.
