A Match Made For Impact: My Carolina Youth Coalition Story
Towards the end of 2022 coming off a global pandemic, I was very much in need of ways to get connected to my local community. I’d moved to Charlotte 2 years prior but had few opportunities to get out and about seeing as we were all focused on not dying at the time (social distancing, masks, fear, misinformation, loss, what a time COVID-19 was).
Once the world opened back up, I was determined to find reasons to be out of the house. I started with working remotely from third places across the city, and continued with volunteerism, which let me both do good and meet new people in what still was an unfamiliar city.
One of the first organizations I volunteered with was the Carolina Youth Coalition, starting online during COVID as a writing tutor for high-achieving underresourced students working on college scholarship and application essays. That was great, but once in-person meetings kicked up again, I signed up to expand my volunteering into being a mentor, now reviewing essays and providing what guidance I could live in the flesh.
It’s been 4 years now of volunteering with anything and everything related to CYC, and I recently got a chance to talk with their editor and share more about my story and reasons for volunteering.
